Preface

The story behind this book is one worth telling because it has the fingerprints of God all over it. I do not say this proudly, but humbly, knowing that only God could have brought this to pass. In November 1998, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. For Christmas I gave her a daily journal—one with dates and blank pages to write in throughout the new year. I don’t know what I expected. Perhaps I thought she would express her feelings as she endured chemotherapy. Or maybe she would pass on some motherly wisdom to me. Little did I know at the time, but 1999 would be the last year of her life.

After her death, I came upon the journal. What I discovered was astonishing! There were no personal entries—nothing about losing her hair, nothing about enduring chemotherapy, nothing about fearing death. Every day, until mid-November, she faithfully penned a scripture verse, a title, and what the Lord had taught her through His Word. It was succinct yet profound. Pondering the treasure I had been given, I began to understand how she was able to walk toward death with such peace and joy in the midst of the greatest challenge she’d ever faced. I had observed that with each passing day, it was as if she had one foot in heaven and the other on earth—with the heel and then toe of her earthly foot slowly leaving the ground. Although she was fighting for her life, she had been preparing to meet the Lord. Being still before Him, she gleaned spiritual insight right up until the day they met face-to- face. That was the secret to abundant living!

Over the years I had planned to meticulously read through her journal, yet I suspect my sorrow had prevented it. But in December 2012, Jodi, my best friend from college, was battling recurrent cancer. I asked the Lord how I might encourage her in the coming year. He reminded me of Mom’s journal and placed the desire within my heart to share her daily entries with Jodi. (Jodi had known my mother and had observed her faith over the years.) Since Mom had no idea that her entries would be read by anyone, I began the process of editing and rewriting her scriptural insights. I tried to stay true to the titles and daily Bible verses she had chosen. Those daily e-mails became the content for this devotional book.

This book is not about death, but about living the abundant Christian life now! My mother possessed clear spiritual focus the last year of her life. It is my greatest desire that the spiritual truths she gleaned from the Lord would be passed on to the next generation. We all desperately yearn for peace in the midst of life’s challenges. When we are “still” before the Lord, meditating on scripture, He imparts spiritual truth. We can experience abundant living when we apply those truths to our everyday lives. May you be inspired to follow my mother’s example!

To Love and to Cherish ... 365 Devotional Readings for Wives

Marriage…Sometimes romantic, sometimes not-so-romantic, often challenging, always filled with highs, lows, and lots of in betweens—we wouldn’t trade it for anything. But wives are often in need of a little inspiration, a little comfort, a little encouragement—a much-needed spiritual boost.

This daily devotional offers just that, and will meet you right where you are in life. Whether you’re experiencing a wife-of-the-year day or an I-feel-like-the-world’s-worst-wife day, To Love and to Cherish will refresh your spirit and remind you that you aren’t alone on the journey.

Love and Respect
However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
EPHESIANS 5:33  NIV

--------------------

Husbands are called to love.  Wives are called to respect.  Why the distinction?

What does R-E-S-P-E-C-T mean?  Aretha Franklin emphatically defined the word in her 1960’s song by the same name.  According to Webster’s, to respect someone means:  To consider worthy of high regard; to esteem; to refrain from interfering with.  Maybe loving our husbands would have been easier!

Respecting our husbands means we value what they say and what they stand for.  We hold their opinions in high regard.  We ask for their counsel because we truly believe it is wise and astute.  We do not attempt to circumvent their plans or ideas.  There is no room for manipulation or deception, conniving or contriving to railroad our agenda.

As wives we yearn to be loved by our husbands.  In the same way our husbands yearn to be respected by us.  That’s God design.  When our husbands are truly respected, they will be more compelled to respond with love toward us.  God has a plan for marital relationships.  Let’s do our part by respecting our husbands.  When we do, our marriages will thrive!

Dear Lord,
forgive me for not respecting my husband as I should. Teach me how to esteem and value him. Amen.

Blissfully Blended: 365 Devotional Readings for Stepmoms

Stepparenting…sometimes rewarding, at times maddening, often challenging, always filled with highs, lows, and lots of in-betweens. Stepmoms are often in need of a little inspiration, a little comfort, a little encouragement—as much-needed spiritual boost.

This daily devotional offers just that, and will meet you right where you are in life. Whether you’re experiencing a stepmother-of-the-year day or a “you’re not MY mom!” kind of day, Blissfully Blended will refresh your spirit and remind you that you aren’t alone on the journey.

Gentle Words
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
PROVERBS 15:1  NIV

--------------------

“You can’t tell me what to do! You’re not my real mom!”, shouted Cathy’s step-son as he stormed out of the room. The emotional climate at the Miller’s had been extremely volatile and unpredictable since the wedding one year ago. The blending of two families was not as simple as Cathy had hoped. Flare-ups had become routine.  Harsh words were commonplace. An undercurrent of resentment and anger permeated the air. This was not what she had bargained for. How could this vicious cycle be broken?

Regardless of the circumstances that bring two families together, children must sort out many unfamiliar emotions. Suddenly, their family dynamics have been permanently altered. Their security has been rocked; their foundation shaken. Broken hearts can be healed and trust re-established. Step-moms can play a vital role in the process of restoration by displaying patience and understanding.

Ask the Lord to help you lovingly respond to your stepchildren.  Gentle words convey understanding. Harsh words fuel anger. Do not expect your stepchildren to have the ability to respond appropriately. Purpose to be the one that makes the effort; that takes the first step. Reach out to them with kindness and empathy.  Then love instead of resentment will permeate the air!

Dear Lord,
teach me how to respond to my stepchildren with gentle words. May love permeate our home. Amen.

365 Daily Whispers of Wisdom for Busy Women

Schedules fill quickly, to-do lists stretch for miles. Whether it’s career, kids and family, volunteering, homemaking, or all of the above, it’s sometimes hard to find the time to focus on our most important relationship—with our heavenly Father.

This daily devotional is the perfect way to jump-start your spiritual life and will meet you right where you are today. Whether you’re experiencing an I’ve-to-everything-under-control day or a frazzled I’ll-never-get-everything-done day, 365 Daily Whispers of Wisdom for Busy Women will refresh your spirit and remind you that you aren’t alone on the journey.

Can God Interrupt You?
In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.
PROVERBS 16:9  NIV

--------------------

Before rushing out of the house each morning, we grab our calendars or PalmPilots. Our day is efficiently planned.  We are eager to check off our to do list.  But wait!  The phone suddenly rings.  There is an unexpected knock at the door.  The car tire is flat.  How do we react when our plans are interrupted?  Do frustration, resentment and anger quickly surface?  We have places to go and people to meet!  We do not have time for interruptions!

Have you ever considered that perhaps God has ordained our interruptions?  A friend could be calling in need of encouragement.  God knew you’d be just the right person to lift her spirits.  Maybe the knock on the door is a lost child seeking help. Perhaps, just perhaps, God may be trying to get your attention.

There is nothing wrong with planning your day.  However, we have such limited vision.  God sees the big picture.  Be open.  Be flexible.  Allow God to change your plans in order to accomplish His divine purposes.  Instead of becoming frustrated, look for ways the Lord might be working.  Be willing to join Him.  When you do, interruptions will become blessings.

Dear Lord,
forgive me when I am so rigidly locked into my own agenda that I miss Yours. Give me Your eternal perspective so that I may be open to divine interruptions. Amen.

Daily Encouragement for Single Women: 365 Devotional Readings

You’re single…unattached…unfettered….free. Whether your singleness inspires you or terrifies you, God has a special place in His heart for you. He’ll be your protector, provider, comforter, and spiritual husband if you’ll let Him.

This daily devotional is the perfect way to jump-start your relationship with God. These readings will meet you right where you are today and will refresh your spirit and remind you that you aren’t alone on the journey.

Come to Him
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
MATTHEW 11:28-30 NIV

--------------------

Making ends meet as single women is tough; everything depends upon us. Much is on our shoulders. We carry the load. We take on the burdens. When our heads hit the pillow some nights, we’re completely exhausted and weary from seemingly carrying the weight of the whole world. Take heart. There is hope. The Lord never intended for us to go it alone.

Come to Him. Pour out your worries in prayer. Tell Him your concerns. Lay your burdens at His feet. Ask for wisdom. Then listen. Open up the Bible and read truth. The Psalms are especially helpful when experiencing trials. Be still. Meditate on His promises: To never leave or forsake you, to give wisdom for the asking and to find rest for your soul. Learn from Him. Allow the still small voice of the Holy Spirit to whisper encouragement, to build you up, to strengthen you.

We may be single women, but we have an advocate. Allow Him to carry your burdens and give you the rest you yearn for.

Dear Lord,
help me remember that You are there to shoulder my burdens. Give me rest as I come to You. Amen.

365 Daily Whispers of Wisdom for Young Women

You’re just beginning the journey of adulthood.  Education, career, friendships, family, marriage and kids—one or all of the above may be in your life.  As you lay the foundations for your future, how will you make time to grow in your relationship with your heavenly Father?

This daily devotional is the perfect way to jump-start your spiritual life.  Whether you’re in a new place, experiencing a new life, or rooted firmly in a daily routine, 365 Daily Whispers of Wisdom for Young Women will refresh your spirit and remind you that you aren’t alone on the journey.

Rejoice
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
PSALM 118:24 NIV

--------------------

Her heart had been shattered. Tears streamed down her cheeks. She thought he had been the man of her dreams. But earlier that evening he dropped a bombshell. Marriage would not be in their future. She felt as though she had just wasted two years of her life. Sitting in a chair late into the night, she stared out the bedroom window at the pitch-black sky. How could she have let her emotions get so out of hand? She focused on the one thing she knew for certain. The sun would rise in the east. And as it did, the reminder of God’s faithfulness allowed her to rejoice.

Have you ever experienced a time when you felt overwhelmed with sorrow? Life can be confusing and painful, and rejoicing with gladness is not always possible. Take heart. The Lord cares. He empathizes with our pain. With the birth of each new day, He reminds us that His mercies are new every morning. He provides sufficient grace and turns our weakness to strength as we trust Him.

Experiencing trials enables us to grow deeper in our relationship with the Lord. We realize that He is enough. Others may leave us, but He never will. He alone becomes the cause of our rejoicing and gladness. Let’s worship our Creator, even in our darkest days.

Dear Lord,
help me rejoice in You regardless of my circumstances. Amen.

365 Daily Whispers of Wisdom for Preschool Moms

Time Out—Just for Mothers of Preschoolers
Motherhood…Sometimes zany, always wonderful, often amazing, and occasionally downright hilarious—we wouldn’t trade it for anything.  But busy moms are always in need of a little inspiration, a little comfort, a little encouragement—a much-needed pick-me-up.

This daily devotional offers just that, and will meet you right where you are in life.  Whether you’re experiencing a Mommy-of-the-Year day or an I-feel-like-the-world’s-worst-mommy day, 365 Daily Whispers of Wisdom for Mothers of Preschoolers will refresh your spirit and remind you that you aren’t alone on the journey.

Childish Ways
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.
I CORINTHIANS 13:11 NIV

--------------------

One Sunday morning, a young family was scurrying to get ready for church. Tucking the shirttail into the trousers of her four-year-old son, the mother remarked, “Thomas, you look so sharp! You look like a young man!” She wanted to encourage him to leave his shirt neatly in place. Her son looked at her inquisitively and said, “Mom, I’m not a man, I’m just a kid.” He was right! The mother smiled as she immediately pulled out his shirttail!

As mothers, we desire that our children mature properly. Yet sometimes on their journey to adulthood, we do not allow them to be children. We expect them to be grown-up and leave childish ways behind. Adulthood will come soon enough. Do not try to rush the process by putting unrealistic demands on them. Learn to major on the majors and minor on the minors by seeking the Lord’s discernment. Ask the question, “Does this issue have eternal significance?” If the answer is no, allow your child to talk, think, and reason like a child. As an adult, they will be expected to put those childish ways behind them. Until then, leave the shirttail out!

Dear Lord,
I confess that sometimes I want my child to behave as an adult. Give me Your wisdom and discernment.
Amen.

Julie’s blog posts and devotionals are an extension of her journaling that begun after returning from a medical mission trip to Guyana, South America over 15 years ago. While “out of her comfort zone,” she heard the Lord speak very clearly. Upon returning, she yearned to discern His voice amidst the clamor of everyday life. Julie embarked upon a journey to listen and recorded spiritual insights gleaned from God’s Word in her journal. That journey continues today as she encourages and inspires others to listen and apply God’s truth.
