Asleep in a Rocking Boat
Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. Matthew 8:23-26
Jesus found himself with his disciples in a boat on the Sea of Galilee in the midst of a violent storm. Yet Jesus was so relaxed that He had fallen asleep! After being awakened by the terrified disciples, he rebuked their lack of faith. Jesus had been able to relax because He knew His Heavenly Father was in control—of the wind—of the waves—of their small boat. Jesus had total confidence in His Father’s love and believed that God’s purposes would prevail.
When the storms of life take us completely by surprise, what is our reaction? Do we panic like the disciples while our faith is swept overboard by the waves? Or can we rest in our loving Father’s arms, knowing that He is in control of what we cannot see? When our boat is being rocked, do we fretfully fear that we are going to drown or do we look to the One who can calm the storm simply with His word?
Jesus spoke and the waves obeyed. Read God’s Word and experience the waves within your heart quiet down. Do not dwell on external circumstances. Keep focused on truth and the promises found in His Word. Read the Psalms and embrace God’s loving protection. He will not let you drown. Allow Jesus to calm the waging waters in your soul. Then sleep like Jesus did….even in a rocking boat.
Dear Lord, I can certainly relate to the disciple’s fear. Help me trust You more when the storms of life threaten to take me under. Faith displaces fear. May it be so in my life today. Amen.
